El Cortez Hotel: A History of Hosting Memorable Comic-Cons
El Cortez Don Room and Terrace has been the site of many Comic-Cons, beginning in 1972. Some of the most memorable cons, according to many longtime attendees, were held right here at El Cortez Hotel, fondly remembered as part of the “Golden Age of Comic-Con”. It was here that Richard Alf, one of the original founders of the San Diego Comic Convention, remembers as being instrumental to the Con’s growth during the ‘70s:
“I think the El Cortez years are the years that people fondly remember the best. The El Cortez had a fairly large complex, you know, up on Ash Street. It was one block just for the hotel plus it had several other hotels around it with connecting ramps and its own convention center. So as the convention grew up into several thousand attendees, we were able to be contained within this area.”
